On Calm - Unleash Success
In this private, half-hour lesson, we will work on developing a focused relationship between you and your dog.
The curriculum is tailored to dogs that are:
- Easily distracted by their environment
- Having trouble focusing on you
- Wandering off during training
- Overly interested in other dogs
- Prone to leaving you as soon as the leash comes off (ie not suitable yet for agility class)
This format is NOT for dogs that are:
- Fearful or aggressive towards dogs or people in the classroom environment (if that is the case, CLICK HERE and HERE!)
We will be increasing your dog’s motivation and desire to work with you through a series of exercises and games. Instead of struggling unsuccessfully to try and get your dog’s attention amidst distractions (causing frustration on the human’s part and an even more distracted dog), we teach your dog to choose to focus on you!
This class will involve weekly homework so please be prepared to dedicate at least ten minutes most days to training. Your dog will thank you for it!
Curriculum
Some of these behaviours are similar to those taught in Foundation, but are geared towards those dogs that are having trouble working through distraction.
- Mat and targeting work for self control
- Body awareness exercises to channel excited and scattered energy into focus
- Crate games to work on impulse control
- Going from excitement to calm and back again
- Turning over-‐the-‐top greetings into appropriate interactions
- Recall games
Recommended Pre-Lesson Homework
If you can, please work on having your dog happily enter a crate to eat a meal (door can stay open).
What to Bring to the Lesson
- Your dog wearing a flat collar or harness on a 6 ft leash
- A crate (or use one of ours) and crate cover (ie a sheet)
- A mat that your dog can use to settle on
- Higher value (like meat) and lower value (like kibble) treats
- Your dog’s favourite (non‐squeaky) toy
- A food bowl that is different from your dog’s regular dish
- Something for your dog to do when taking a break (ie something to chew on or a stuffed kong)
Pre-Requisites
1. Parvo/distemper vaccination certificate no older than 3 years, or parvo/distemper titer certificate no older than 1 year.
2. Dog is over 8 weeks old and not reactive to other dogs or people. For dogs under 17 weeks of age, your veterinarian needs to countersign the registration form.
3. Discuss with us whether your dog is suitable for this class. If in doubt, call us (250-929-1400) and we may possibly arrange an evaluation.
Lessons are 1/2 hour in length. The fee is the same as for our other private training services, including discount packages (New Client Package, 5% discount for a prepaid 5-pack of lessons, and 10% discount for a prepaid 10-pack of lessons).
WELCOME!

Hi Bev – I thought I’d let you know that Cody’s behaviour has been absolutely stellar since we graduated Foundations. We’ve been doing quite a bit of off leash walking, and he is suddenly paying so much more attention, coming when he is called – even if he’s playing with other dogs – I can hardly believe it!
Thanks again for all your help. Looking forward to seeing more info on Advanced Clicker and the other course you mentioned (good neighbor?) in October.
