FOCUS

Focus On Calm - Unleash Success

In this class we will work on developing a focused relationship between you and your dog.

The class is tailored to dogs that are:

  • Easily distracted by their environment
  • Having trouble focusing on you
  • Wandering off during training
  • Overly interested in other dogs
  • Prone to leaving you as soon as the leash comes off (ie not suitable yet for agility class)

This class is NOT for dogs that are:

  • Fearful or aggressive towards dogs or people in the classroom environment (if that is the case, CLICK HERE and HERE!)

We will be increasing your dog’s motivation and desire to work with you through a series of exercises and games. Instead of struggling unsuccessfully to try and get your dog’s attention amidst distractions (causing frustration on the human’s part and an even more distracted dog), we teach your dog to choose to focus on you!

This class will involve weekly homework so please be prepared to dedicate at least ten minutes most days to training. Your dog will thank you for it!

Curriculum

Some of these behaviours are similar to those taught in Foundation, but are geared towards those dogs that are having trouble working through distraction.

  • Mat and targeting work for self control
  • Body awareness exercises to channel excited and scattered energy into focus
  • Crate games to work on impulse control
  • Going from excitement to calm and back again
  • Turning over-‐the-‐top greetings into appropriate interactions
  • Recall games

Recommended Pre-Class Homework

If you can, please work on having your dog happily enter a crate to eat a meal (door can stay open).

What to Bring to Class

  • Your dog wearing a flat collar or harness on a 6 ft leash
  • A crate (or use one of ours) and crate cover (ie a sheet)
  • A mat that your dog can use to settle on
  • Higher value (like meat) and lower value (like kibble) treats
  • Your dog’s favourite (non‐squeaky) toy
  • A food bowl that is different from your dog’s regular dish
  • Something for your dog to do when taking a break (ie something to chew on or a stuffed kong)

What Clients Are Saying:

Lisbeth -I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know that Lexy is doing great. We are so proud of her. In the last month it seems like she has realized that life is ok here and she doesn’t have to worry anymore. Resource guarding gone. No more worried looks. Even the door is ok now. When familiar people come she doesn’t even bother getting off the couch anymore and minimal barking with any other comings and goings. I have had her off leash a fair bit and she listens when I call her. And she regularly turns around to see where I am. Best of all, she loves to swim and she loves the sailboat. Thanks for all your help – Warm regards from us and Lexy !!

My darling French Bulldog Maggie has passed this course with distinction. This would not have been possible without the fine teachings of Karen and Bev. Both these ladies conveyed instructions clearly and with humour, making the hour fun and interesting for both dog and owner. Maggie and I thoroughly enjoyed the course and plan on being back for more next fall. With many thanks,

Mimi Hayes and Maggie Mc.F. Hayes
